Home NZ - Elegant Shed by Benjamin Daly

The Shearing Shed is featured in Feb/Mar 2020 issue of Home magazine - The Retreat issue.

‘To call them renovations isn’t quite right: it’s more rehabilitation or re-purposing, a slow process of thinking and pondering that sees an entirely new home emerge from the shell of something utterly prosaic … his work sits at the intersection of craft and architecture, neither one thing nor the other.’

The Railway Palace made it in and on the back cover of a new  @penguinbooksnz book ‘Repurposed’ by Catherine Foster. A cover is a cover after all. Thanks to everyone for your support along the way and go out and read about my slow architecture.

Home NZ - Craft Work by Benjamin Daly

Inside the Hawke's Bay home of Ben Daly @palaceelectric, who rehabbed an original 1950s railway cottage in a process he calls slow architecture, taking apart the building and painstakingly putting it back together. It's not quite renovation, and it's not really new – there's a warmth to the result, a tactility that comes from being hand made. ⠀

Old materials lend patina, while new insertions give the place a rough, honest texture. "I'm keen on the idea of memory, the life and stories of everyday buildings," he says. "I'm interested in seeing how much of that I can squeeze out and to show that architecture has a place here too." ⠀
